360 Aerial Panorama of the Original Redan Hole at North Berwick
The Legendary "Redan" at North Berwick Golf Club! ⛳️
If you're a golf architecture fan, you'll know all about the 15th hole at North Berwick's West Links – affectionately known as "Redan"!
WHY IS IT SO FAMOUS?
The Redan is the ORIGINAL template hole! Countless architects around the world (like C.B. Macdonald & Seth Raynor) copied its brilliant design for their own courses. Its name comes from a V-shaped military fortification, reflecting its angled and well-defended green.
It's a true test of skill and strategy, offering thrilling possibilities from birdies to bogeys – a sign of truly great design!
️HOLE DETAILS:
Par: 3
Length: Approximately 189-190 yards from the medal tees.
Green:
Set at a challenging 45-degree angle (usually front-right to back-left).
Slopes significantly from front-to-back and often right-to-left. Semi-blind from the tee – you often only see the flag!
GUARDS! Deep bunkers, especially the notorious one on the front-left.
A "shoulder" or mound on the front-right helps funnel good shots towards the hole. Run-off areas behind the green make over-hit shots tough!
PLAYING IT:
The classic way to play it? A draw that lands on the front-right shoulder, letting the slope feed your ball to the pin. Missing short or in the front-left bunker means a very tricky recovery!
The Redan is a true masterpiece of golf architecture! Have you played it? What did you think? Let us know in the comments!
